Genshin Impact: The Chinese Game Taking The World By Storm

Business & Economics

Genshin Impact is China’s latest success story – Let’s find out more about this gaming sensation.

With advancements in technology, mobile gaming has made major advancements. One country that has benefited from this boom has been China. China currently has the world’s biggest mobile gaming market which generates $18 billion in revenue. Chinese games have also been making waves with the rise of E-Sports. Some of the current top gamers are Chinese and earning millions for their online gaming. This includes Chinese gaming Champion Yu Wen-Bo. Chinese game developers have been on the rise and one game that has taken the world by storm is Genshin Impact.

Genshin Impact: What is it?

Genshin Impact is an open-world role-playing game. This means you get to play different characters, whilst exploring the fantasy world of Tevyat. The game features various storylines, battles, missions and puzzles to keep users hooked. Within the game, you can interact with your surroundings and even invite your friends to join you on your adventures. With the current pandemic and lockdowns, mobile gaming has been on the rise. So with limited travel, it’s no wonder people are opting for a trip to Tevyat instead.

Genshin Impact: How successful is the game?

Within a week of its release in 2020, Genshin Impact was downloaded over 15 million times on mobile phones. In addition to this, the game grossed $60 million – within two weeks this figure had also doubled. These figures don’t account for the fact the Genshin Impact was made available on PC, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch consoles due to its mobile success.

Genshin Impact: Why is it so popular?

For a game initially available on mobile, Genshin Impact has impressive graphics on par with regular consoles games. Many have compared the game to Nintendo’s hugely popular Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. These comparisons have also created heated online debate, especially about the future of Chinese and Japanese game development. However, unlike Zelda, Genshin is free to download. The game’s mechanics also mean that it is widely addictive. Like many popular mobile games, Genshin operates using a “Gacha” system. Like a vending machine, users constantly play (and sometimes pay) in the hopes of winning in-game prizes. Also, the open-world game means unlimited exploration so people can spend hours playing.

Genshin Impact: Who made the game?

The game was created by miHoYo a Shanghai-based animation and games development studio. The studio began as a project by students at Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University so that they could share their love for anime and video games. However, Genshin is not their first successful game. They released a similar game called Honkai Impact in 2016.

Genshin Impact: Why is this important to China

The success of miHoYo has elevated China’s presence in the gaming development world. Genshin was reported to be “the biggest ever global launch” for a Chinese game. Mobile games, similar to Genshin Impact have often been the success stories of Japanese game developers. However, now that Chinese game developers are multiplying their success, China could soon have a complete foothold on the market which will create fierce competition. Chinese consumers have been the main drivers behind the mobile gaming boom, but now Chinese developers will too.
